Wills, Trusts & Probate
Protecting your legacy and guiding your family through probate.
07 — Overview
A properly drafted will is the foundation of an estate plan — it directs how your assets are distributed, names a guardian for minor children, and appoints an executor. Without one, Maine's intestacy laws decide for you.
In probate, the court confirms that a will is valid, oversees payment of the deceased person's debts, and supervises distribution of what remains. A Personal Representative — often called an executor — is appointed to manage that work, and we help Personal Representatives meet their fiduciary responsibilities correctly and on time.
Smaller estates can often skip full probate in favor of one of Maine's streamlined procedures, and we help determine which path fits your situation. When disputes arise among heirs or beneficiaries, we also represent clients in probate litigation, including will contests.
